Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) was established in the year 1992, it was initially started as an Industrial Training Institute with only two faculty and twelve students. It was started to create an advanced institute for professional learning of international standards where the quest for knowledge and excellence will be the highest, free of the barriers of language, nationality, cultural plurality, and religion. In the year 2004, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), it was declared a deemed university and renamed `.

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology has taken a bold initiative of KIIT Green to manage environmental pollution and to make a healthy atmosphere approximately 25 sq. km. region in which different campuses of the University are situated. Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology has implemented paperless management as well. KIIT has also drawn a determined plan to make the campus completely vehicle free.
After providing an effective transport arrangement, the use of two-wheelers, both by staff as well as students, has been prohibited by the University. Along with restrictive vehicular pollution and plantation, various other environmentally friendly initiatives have been undertaken by KIIT Green like water management, rainwater harvesting, bio-gas, solar energy, and sewerage treatment.
